Small Boat Level 1 Instructor Course
About this event
This course is open to any interested boater in Guam or the Marianas. Spots are limited and are offered on a first registered and paid basis.
Conducted by Morgan Collins, US Sailing-certified instructor trainer, this US Sailing Small Boat Level 1 Instructor Course is designed to provide experienced sailors interested in sailing instruction with information on how to teach sailing safely, effectively, and creatively. Powerboating-certified Small Boat Level 1 Instructor you must complete the following five steps:
Step 1- Complete the US Powerboating Safe Powerboat Handling Course
- 16 hour hands-on, on the water course.
- On February 24th and 25th at the Marianas Yacht Club.
- The fee is $50. Register for "Step 1 Us Powerboating Safe Powerboat Handling Course".
Step 2- Become a US Sailing Member
-You have to be a US Sailing member to register.

-The fee for a Junior Membership is $39
Step 3- Complete the Teaching and Coaching Fundamentals Online (TCFO) course.
-Teaching and Coaching Fundamentals Online (TCFO) gives you the building blocks of good instructional practices to become an effective educator on and off the water.
-The course is approximately 90-minutess.
-The fee for this course is $10.
Step 4- Register & Complete the Small Boat Level 1 Instructor online section.
The Online section is completely self-guided, allowing participants to learn at their own pace and includes no scheduled interaction with an Instructor Trainer. This course must be completed prior to attendance of the in-person section.

The fee for the Instructor Online section is $130.
Step 5- Register & Complete the in-person evaluation & certification
Following successful completion of the on-line portion of the Sailing Instructor Level I Course, students will be counseled and evaluated on their teaching ability, sailing skills, powerboat handling skills and on-water class management, among other topics during a 3-day hands-on, on-the-water course.
-Dates are March 1, 2, & 3 at Marianas Yacht Club.

About the instructor, Morgan Collins
An avid boater since his youth, Morgan is a graduate and former sail team member of Brandeis University. He also holds a MA from Columbia University in New York. Morgan has been an instructor with US Sailing for over 35 years and is currently the Boating Manager at University of California, Berkley. He also serves as a Director on the Board of the Alameda Community Sailing Center and was the School Director at Club Nautique in San Francisco, and Executive Director at Sail Sand Point.
Location: The course will be held at the Marianas Yacht Club in Piti.
