Beginner’s Class Requirements:
No prior sailing experience is required. The class is open to adults who are comfortable in the water and ready to learn.
Instructional craft: MYC will use the International 420, a small 2-person sailboat, approximately 14’ long. Students will learn skills for both the helmsman and crew. Each class involves on-water and classroom-based instruction. You will learn boat handling, sail trim, wind awareness, safety procedures, teamwork and communication between the helmsman and crew, and basic navigation.
Skill Development: Sailing a 420 involves a wide range of skills, including boat handling, sail control, wind awareness, tactics, and strategy. You'll develop these skills through practice and training, which can help you become a more proficient sailor.
Boat Maintenance and Repairs: As a sailor, you are responsible for general maintenance and care of your boat. This includes rigging, checking for wear and tear, keeping the boat in good condition, and providing proper storage.
Safety: Safety is a fundamental aspect of sailing. Life jackets are a requirement while on the water. You must bring your personal life jacket. A good fit for you will insure your safety and comfort. Training in safety procedures, other than the swim and staying afloat test, include capsize recovery, first aid, and navigation. Don’t forget sun protection: SPF clothing, SPF sun screen, UV sunglasses, water shoes, and a good hat. Leather sailing gloves are a nice addition. Biking gloves are a good substitute.
